What Is a Birth Plan?

Saturday, June 27th, 2009

A birth plan helps your midwife understand your needs, wishes and expectations about giving birth. And although it is not essential to have one, a birth plan can help you feel more confident and in control when you go into the delivery ward. Over 70% of women now make a birth plan. Tips for making a birth plan:

How you feel about the induction or acceleration of labour
Whether you want to be active during birth
Who you want with you during labour
Whether you would like the option of a birthing pool for labour and birth
What pain relief you would like if any.

Stay Healthy During Your Pregnancy

Thursday, June 25th, 2009

It is important to look after yourself when you are pregnant. Here are some ideas to help stay healthy during pregnancy…

Try to eat well. There is a lot of information around about what you can and can’t eat during pregnancy. One of the main things to remember is to eat regularly and choose from a range of nutritious foods:
Fresh fruit and vegetables
Carbohydrates (bread, pasta, grains, potatoes and cereals)
Lean meat or fish, especially oily fish
Milk and other dairy products

Exercise can be very beneficial when you are pregnant. It may help to ease stress and promote good sleep and also help you cope during the birth. You could try:
Brisk walking
Swimming
Gentle toning or stretching classes

If you find it hard to get a good night’s sleep because of your bump, why not try sleeping on your side or with a pillow between your legs
Learning a relaxation technique
Wearing loose cotton night clothes to stop yourself getting too hot
Taking a relaxing bath.

Is Your Baby Teething?

Tuesday, June 23rd, 2009

All babies deal with pain in a different way, some will have an easier time of it than others. Most babies with get a little grouchy and irritable. The first signs of teething usually begin a few months before the first tooth appears so you will need to look for particular symptoms to ensure that this is actually the cause:

Restlessness,irritability and disturbed sleep patterns
Sore and red gums
Flushed cheeks
Loss of appetite
A slight rise in temperature
Dribbling
A desire to chew anything to ease the pain. This is a completely natural reaction to the changes that are going on within the gum and it is thought that chewing on something hard feels quite soothing.
Sometimes you can actually see the tooth cutting through the gum, or you may be able to feel it emerging if you run a clean finger along your baby’s gum line.

Helping Your Baby To Sleep

Sunday, June 21st, 2009

All babies need to sleep so that they can grow and develop. Every baby has a different sleep pattern – some sleep through the night and others do not!

There are some simple steps you can take to help encourage a more peaceful night’s rest if your baby is not settling:

Keep lights low while feeding at night
Talk and sing in a soft voice so baby starts to see a difference between day and night
Start a simple bedtime routine of bath, feed and bed
If you can, try to always put your baby in her cot (or moses basket) so she associates it with bedtime
Have a little wind down time after any play.

Ireland’s First Sextuplet Babies

Friday, June 5th, 2009

A woman in Northern Ireland has given birth to six babies. The sextuplets were delivered by caesarean section at the Royal Victoria Hospital in Belfast. It was the first recorded birth of sextuplets – four girls and two boys. The babies were delivered by caesarean section, were 14 weeks premature. The babies, weighing between 1Ib 7oz and 2lb and 2oz had been conceived naturally without the aid of IVF. The team at the hospital had been preparing for the delivery for a number of weeks and said that it was a day they had been looking forward to with a mixture of trepidation and excitement.
