Do You Want To Know The Sex Of Your Baby?

February 10th, 2010

A simple blood test might tell you the sex of your unborn baby. This is the conclusion of research published in the issue of the journal Obstetrics and Gynaecology. Between 2003 and 2009 the researchers tested women who were between eight and 10 weeks pregnant. They studied DNA from blood samples to predict the sex of the babies in 186 pregnancies. They predicted 105 boys and 81 girls. They were right every time.

What Happens At A Naming Ceremony?

February 5th, 2010

Most naming ceremonies in the UK are conducted by civil ceremonies. These can take place anywhere, for example at home, in the garden, a hotel or park and will always be delivered by a fully trained celebrant.
At christenings, traditionally the service focuses on welcoming the child into the church and religious faith, whereas naming ceremonies concentrate on the relationship between the child, parents and family. Promises are made to the child by the parents and by supporting adults. Families can also choose to include favourite readings, poems or music and have a naming day certificate as a special memento.

Why Choose A Naming Ceremony?

February 3rd, 2010

Couples who do not have religious beliefs still think it is important to hold a ceremony to welcome the child into the family and make a commitment to their welfare. For couples with mixed beliefs a naming ceremony can be a good alternative to having to decide one one religion to welcome the child into.

What Is A Naming Ceremony?

February 1st, 2010

The Family Covenant Society was set up to provide welcoming ceremonies for children, helping to cement the bond between parents, children and their families. In 1994 this was know as the Baby Naming Society which was an organisation dedicated to helping families create a ceremony that they could carry out themselves. Many parents preferred to have a professional celebrant to deliver the ceremonies and in 2002 Civil Ceremonies Ltd was launched. This provided trained celebrants to carry out naming ceremonies. The Baby Naming Society was incorporated into civil ceremonies and today the organisation has a nationwide network of some 200 celebrants.

Weird And Wonderful Baby Names!

January 27th, 2010

Hearing of a family naming a child after the entire Liverpool football team seems mild in comparison to others. A new Zealand couple named their twins Benson and Hedges and another child was named 4Real!
In chila nearly 3,500 children were named Aoyun which means Olympics, after the bid first came up to host the event. In 2007 a Chinese couple tried to name their boy @, stating that using the universally recognised symbol reflected their love for him.

How To Choose A Name For Your Baby

January 25th, 2010

Some decide on a name before the baby is born and others wait to see what the baby looks like before they make a decision. Years ago people tended to name their children after religious figures or political heroes. Today we see the celebrity habit of giving their children different names, but they may not be as individual as they first seem. In 1870 a baby was named Brooklyn and in 1853 a child was called Apple!. The first baby to be registered with the name Princess was in 1847 and has since been used at least 1,800 times.

Does The Order That Your Children Are Born Affect Their Life?

December 30th, 2009

Many parents often believe that the order of birth for their children has an impact on how they grow up, things such as their personality and outcomes in life can be affected.

In an effort to get a better answer on the topic, a survey of 10,000 mums was carried out to get their opinions on the subject. The following are examples of some of the questions:

Do you think birth order (ie position in the family) has an effect on a person?
23% answered No and 77% answered Yes.

If you have more than one child, which one do you think will succeed most academically?
Oldest Child 35%, Middle Child 6%, Youngest Child 15% and Cannot Say 44%

If you have more than one child, which of them do you identify with the most?
Oldest Child 39%, Middle Child 7%, Youngest Child 16% and Cannot Say 38%

If you have more than one child which one do you think is more likely to be susceptible to anxiety or depression in their life?
Oldest Child 45%, Middle Child 7%, Youngest Child 16% and Cannot Say 42%

If you have more than one child, which of them do you think will be happiest in life?
Oldest Child 7%, Middle Child 7%, Youngest Child 35% and Cannot Say 51%

Despite 77% of mums believing that birth order does affect a child, there were a large number of mums who wasn’t sure about, or were not able to answer some of the questions. However the results are rather interesting. For example, despite the older child being expected to succeed more academically, the youngest child is expected to be the happiest in life – as well as being least likely to fall into depression or anxiety.
